Name Three Videos that left a mark on your psyche.

Some of you out there may not know this but MTV did not always reek of reality TV. Long ago, when they had a spaceman in neon colors, they actually had Music. That is what the M stands for, Music. Not ‘Morons who embarrass themselves for 15 5 Minutes of Fame’.
So I wanted to play a game with you all. Name 3 videos that left an impression with you. The videos that you stole dance moves from to be the coolest kid at the middle school dance. The videos that provided the lyrics that you swore one day would grace your epitaph. Even the videos that caused you to break a remote because it seemed to be on repeat and caused you to lose sleep because the lyrics would not leave you alone (We are not all ‘Shiny Happy People’). But Just pick 3.. Preferably the first three that come to mind. Here are mine:
Phil Collins – Don’t lose my number
Why? Cowboy, Mad Max, a Ninja,…check
John Mellencamp – Hurt So Good
Why?This song kicks ass and for some reason I remembered the vampiress in the chain as being hot. I stand corrected. (damn you prepubescent hormones)!
Tom Petty – Don’t Come Around Here No More
Why? I credit this video for keeping me away from acid. I thought holy crap they are eating the girl and she is cake… this is what it must be like to be on acid.. no thanks!
I get a bonus one for starting the list, and since it is a song with lyrics that for told the future and partially inspired this list.
Natalie Merchant and ‘10,000 Maniacs’ – ‘Candy Everybody Wants’
You’ll get the idea.
Now go and find three videos that kept you coming back for more… until the ‘Real World’ Came along.. those bastards!

I know she wanted to have sex with me. The good thing about this video is that even though she is now like 70 years old, she is still hot. Thank god for lube…

Another hot chick from the 80’s but the thing that makes this video totaly rad is Captain Lou Albano. Anyone that has the first name Captain has to be cool.

Not much to say about this but it’s still an awesome song and they are from my homeland.

Bonus- Seems as most of my memories of MTV are based on sex but whatever. Martha Quinn. Damn she was hot and still is…

I did not steal dance moves from the following videos, since my dancing days were pretty bad, but the following videos, and many other music videos not mentioned, did leave an impression:
Van Halen “Hot For Teacher”
http://youtube.com/watch?v=b5t5GukrWOU
How could you not like Van Halen videos when they made their debut on MTV (or anything by David Lee Roth – the videos were just what every high school male wanted to see, bikini clad women dancing for the camera) -
Dire Straits “Money For Nothing”
http://youtube.com/watch?v=aNaKWXqXkhw
The animation, considered very cool at the time, made it different. Knopfler on guitar and Sting singing background vocals made the video a classic.
Peter Gabriel “Sledgehammer”
http://youtube.com/watch?v=hqyc37aOqT0
Another use of animation that made the video memorable. The song may not have been one of my favorite Peter Gabriel songs, but the video was different compared to other music videos released during the same time.
Sorry, one more honorable mention -
Robert Palmer “Addicted to Love”
http://youtube.com/watch?v=F0U5JfGYx4c
Yes, it was considered by many a cliche video, but it is still copied by many videos/movies today. The red lips and short black dresses never leave your mind.

Metallica – “One”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwW9L_qzqp8
Not in a good way, but definitely left a mark. When they were cool, before they sold out.
Culture Club – “Karma Chameleon”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3u3HQtv61M
Also not in a good way because I clearly sat through it several times before realizing the chick singing was a dude. Small town…
Stray Cats – “Stray Cat Strut”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGg3_T_FcOQ
A song I still listen to quite often, just a cool song and the video was pretty good too. Simple, old school.

Since everyone else is afraid to admit it, here goes:
MC Hammer – You Can’t Touch This
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMzoBkaFxh4
Gregg can verify, I had wicked dance skills in school, many a circle surround me at school dances.
DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince – Parents Just Don’t Understand
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-O4sSZc2WCU
Really bad video, but Will Smith was the king of storytelling in hip hop at the time. He also had the baddest DJ on the Planet!
Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg – Nuthin’ But a G Thang
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEMmbtcxbpc
By now if you have not guessed, yes I am black.
One Love.
